Navigation
What the crossing between Menorca and Mallorca is like
A short but demanding channel: the tramontana rules.
The Menorca channel separates Capdepera from Ciutadella by about 20 nm. In good weather it is a short hop; in a tramontana, the north wind blows in unobstructed and the sea builds fast. That is why the weather window sets the date.
From Mahón the usual route runs down the south coast of Menorca and crosses to the east coast of Mallorca, which is better sheltered from the north.
In practice: if the boat has to reach Palma, the crossing and the run round the island are usually done in one day at 18 knots. At 9 knots, Mahón → Palma calls for a technical stop at an east-coast port.
Before departure, the skipper checks fluid levels, bilges, batteries and safety gear. If the boat is going to the yard with a known fault, we recommend a marine engineer on board.

Another question? Message us on WhatsApp and we will reply the same day.
How much does it cost to deliver a boat from Menorca to Mallorca?
With a 46 ft planing motor yacht and a skipper only: Ciutadella → Palma about €795 + VAT and Mahón → Palma about €775 + VAT. This includes two skipper days, crew travel to Menorca, the return to base and one per diem. Fuel is extra: about €1,343 from Ciutadella at 18 knots.
What is the shortest crossing between Menorca and Mallorca?
Ciutadella → Port d'Alcúdia, about 37 nm (2 h at 18 knots), or Ciutadella → Cala Rajada, about 27 nm. The Menorca channel, between Capdepera and Ciutadella, is about 20 nm wide.
How long does it take by boat from Mahón to Palma?
About 113 nm along the south of Menorca and the east coast of Mallorca: 6 h 20 min at 18 knots and 12 h 30 min at 9 knots. At that speed we make a technical stop at an east-coast port such as Porto Cristo or Cala d'Or.
What about the tramontana?
The Menorca channel is very exposed to the north wind, which builds a sea within hours. We plan the departure with official forecasts and, if the tramontana sets in, we do not sail. With flexible dates we choose the window before travelling to Menorca and avoid standby days.
